It took until May 4th for it to happen, but it finally did. The baseball season for 2014 is finally here. Opening Day was the warmest day of the year so far. The conditions were perfect for a baseball game. It was hot, but not too hot, there was a slight breeze, there was no threat of rain, the grass was thick and green and two teams of grown men battled it out competing in the game of their youth once again.
Youth baseball is hugh. It seems like almost every kid plays baseball at some point in their childhood. Parents are able to enjoy the game of their youth again through their kids as they take them to countless games in countless tournaments. But for a few lucky guys like us, we still have the pleasure of suiting up each Sunday and getting out on the field ourselves. This season the league has 7 teams full of guys in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and beyond competing the best they can week in and week out. There will be winners and losers when the scores are tallied at the end of the game, but just being able to continue to play the great game of baseball makes all of them winners. Hopefully, win or lose, we keep that in mind each week and enjoy the opportunity we have to just be out there on a baseball field.
This year, as with all previous years, our local league will be affiliated with the National Men's Senior Baseball League (MSBL). By being affiliated with them we as players have the opportunity to participate in any of the National and Regional tournaments sponsored by the MSBL. Several of us have participated in these tournaments over the years and it's a great added benefit to being part of an MSBL league. If you want more information on the tournaments or how to participate you can go to the National MSBL web site at http://www.msblnational.com and click on the tournament link. You can also hunt out all of us old timers that have played in some of these tournaments in the past for some additional information.
Now get out there and get ready to play some baseball.
